We have a Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group in Gainesville, FL. Our group meets once a month to share ideas, experiences, and resources. Our goal is to help Grandparents nuture their Grandchildren to grow healthy mentally and physically.

The group is sponsored by the Fearnside Family Services Center which includes Head Start and First Start and the Mid-Florida Area Agency On Aging.

The meetings are free and open to everyone, even those who are Relatives Raising Other Relatives Children. Childcare is provided at all meetings.

We are also actively looking for individuals who are interested in starting a group in Chiefland, FL. Please contact Katina Mustipher if you are interested.

Meetings are free and held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Northern Trust Bank, in the Larsen Room, at 4001 Tamiami Trail North.

Also, free and open to all grandparents raising grandchildren, there is a more casual get-together for the family on the third Sunday of every month from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. at Lake Avalon, Sugden Regional Park, 4284 Avalon Drive, in Naples. Just bring a lunch, the children and bathing suits.

The Alliance will send a monthly bulletin listing any changes in the schedule, meeting topics and guests, and programs of interest in the area or on the web.

Meetings always include a coffee and experience sharing time between the grandparents.

It is called the Kinship Care Warmline, a statewide, toll-free line for grandparents and other relatives raising children in Florida. This line provides grandparents raising grandchildren with emotional support and information and referral services. We are working from a grant through the state legislature in a collaborative effort among three universities: University of South Florida School of Social Work, Nova Southeastern University, and Florida International University. All three universities house Kinship Support Centers that provide information and referral services, emotional support, technical assistance, and legal support to grandparents raising grandchildren.
